6 Days Umbwe Route – Mount Kilimanjaro

6 DAYS TREK TO MOUNT KILIMANJARO – UMBWE ROUTE

The Umbwe Route offers a challenging and scenic 6-day trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steep ascent, this route is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a more rugged, adventurous experience. Starting at the Umbwe Gate, you’ll pass through lush rainforests, alpine meadows, and high-altitude desert landscapes, with stunning views throughout.

Guided by expert Kilimanjaro guides and supported by a professional team, you’ll enjoy a safe and memorable trek to the summit. The Umbwe Route’s steeper gradient requires strong fitness but rewards you with a more secluded, less crowded path to Africa’s highest peak, Uhuru Peak.

The trail quickly becomes steeper, and you’ll ascend through dense vegetation. After a steady climb, you reach Umbwe Camp, situated at 2,850m (9,350ft), for your first overnight stay. The focus today is on acclimatization and adjusting to the altitude.

This section is known for its steep climbs and the famous Barranco Wall, a rocky ascent that provides a challenging yet rewarding experience. Once at Barranco Camp, located at 3,950m (12,960ft), you’ll have panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. The night is spent here, allowing time for acclimatization.

DAY 5

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

We begin our ascent between midnight and 2 a.m., tackling the most challenging part of the trek. Heading toward the summit, we pass between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, navigating steep switchbacks and scree toward Stella Pointon the crater rim. At Stella Point, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking sunrise, with faster hikers reaching the summit in time to catch the view.
From Stella Point, it’s a final one-hour climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Congratulations! You’ve reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and all of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, we pause to savor the moment. We then begin our descent to Mweka Camp, stopping for lunch and a brief rest at Barafu.
