DAY 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts

Departing from Arusha, you’ll enjoy a scenic 45-minute drive through the village of Machame to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. While waiting for your permits to be processed, take in the bustling activity as other trekking crews prepare. As your trek begins, immerse yourself in the lush rainforest, following winding trails surrounded by vibrant flora and fauna. Your guide will provide fascinating insights into the local ecosystem. The lower elevations can be muddy and slippery, so we strongly recommend wearing gaiters and using trekking poles for added stability and comfort.

Distance: 7km Duration: 4-5 Hours
Elevation: 1830m/6000ft to 2740m/9000ft
Accommodation: Mandara Hut

DAY 2

Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and begin our ascent through heathland, where you may spot giant lobelias and groundsels. As we climb into the open moorlands, small shrubs become the predominant vegetation. We pause for lunch with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak before continuing on to Horombo Huts. Arriving in the late afternoon, you’ll be treated to incredible views of the Kibo Summit. As we gain altitude, temperatures begin to drop, marking your transition into higher terrain.

Distance: 11km Duration: 6-8 Hours
Elevation: 32740m/9000ft to 3690m/12,100ft
Accommodation: Horombo Huts

DAY 3

Horombo Huts

You will spend a full day and a second night at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. On this day, you can either rest and relax at the huts or take a short hike to Mawenzi Base Camp, returning to Horombo afterward. This extra day allows your body to adjust to the altitude and helps you better understand the mountain’s weather and conditions. After this acclimatization pause, you’ll continue your journey on Day 4, ascending to Kibo Hut in preparation for your midnight summit attempt.

DAY 4

Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts

After breakfast, we continue our journey through the fading heathland, which gradually gives way to a barren moonscape as we approach the vast saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. During our lunch stop, you’ll have the opportunity to take in the sweeping views of the saddle. As we cross this expansive terrain, you’ll get a glimpse of the summit route on Kibo, which you’ll soon begin in just a few hours.

Distance: 10km Duration: 6-8 Hours
Elevation: 3690m/12,100ft to 4695m/15,400ft
Accommodation: Kibo Huts

DAY 5

Kibo Huts to Summit to Horombo Huts

Day 5 is summit day on your Kilimanjaro trek via the Marangu Route, an exciting and challenging day. You’ll begin your ascent from Kibo Hut around midnight or early morning, climbing steep, rocky trails and scree slopes toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After hours of perseverance, you’ll reach the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a sense of achievement.
After a brief stop for photos and celebrations, you’ll begin your descent, first resting at Kibo Hut before continuing down to Horombo Hut. By late afternoon or evening, you’ll arrive at Horombo to rest and recover, reflecting on your incredible accomplishment.

Distance: 19km Duration: 11-15 Hours
Elevation: 4,703m/15,430ft to 5,895m/19,341ft to 3,720m/12,205ft

DAY 6

Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony to thank your crew, it’s time to say your goodbyes. We begin our descent, stopping at Mandara Huts for a well-deserved lunch. Be sure to tip your guides, cooks, and porters before parting ways. We continue down to the Marangu Park Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. As the weather warms, the trail becomes wet, muddy, and steep, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended for added support.
